Massive Data Load Underway

There is currently a massive data load underway to get the General Bookstores filled with product. For two weeks we have been loading book information and have added about 350,000 titles to the database.

There are now approximately 1.2 million books in the general bookstore, of which over 775,000 are active and in stock. The out of stock items are books that are out of print and no longer available, or old editions of books that have been re-released under new ISBN numbers.

We've been testing out the general bookstore and we are very pleased with the new title additions.

We have a total of over 3 milllion different title records to load, of which there will be approximately 1.2 million active titles when we are finished. So we can now safely say that we are over the half way mark when it comes to loading the full database (when it comes to how many items will be active and in stock when we are completed). Based on this rate of loading, we should have the entire database loaded within two months. Our expectation is that the base bibliographic records (title, author etc) will be loaded at a rate of about a half million records per month. When we are finished we will have to go back and look at all the items that could not be loaded and attempt to reload them. That will be a project for later in the year when we have more time.

Shortly we will begin loading the cover art - the images of the books. That process will get underway in about a week.

Further work will be completed on the landing pages in the bookstore, continuing the process of removing the word "Christian" from every page and beginning the process of censoring out some of the titles. We are also going to be playing around creating some test themes just to show how the stores can be made to look very different - and personalized.

Amusing little story: I had a customer looking for a specific, and lesser known, Dr. Suess book.

I found it in the store, sort of. The edition we have cataloged at this point is in Japanese!

The data load proceeds. We have loaded 1.25 million records, and we now have 800,000 active items in stock. The jacket cover art / book images are now also proceeding and we are limiting the loads to active instock items only - this will help get cover art loaded faster for those items that we can sell. We are loading about 30,000 book jacket images per day. We estimate that we can load a little under one million cover art images per month.

We will be keeping an eye on the system to ensure performance remains satisfactory during the data load and we encourage those of you with general bookstores to check them out.

The routines for calculating total books by category will be reactivated shortly, whcih will improve the view by category experience. And we will be restarting the landing page updates.

Hi All,

We are now at 1.4 million titles loaded into the general/secular bookstore, with over 920,000 active and in stock products.

We are also progressing on loading images for all products, and most instock books with item numbers under 1,000,000 will now have images loaded. Now - there will be lots of books that dont have images in that range. However, we can now state that if we have an image, that image has been loaded for the first million products.

We will be continuing to load images and product data throughout the month of January. We are also working on some major rewrites and a massive re-architecting of some of the underlying data structures to further improve performance.

We are very excited over how the general bookstore is progressing. Last night we did a search on "Sarah Palin" on the general bookstore and found over 28 instock books - and we are not even half way through the data load. We also did searches in "iPhone" and found quite a few books on developing iPhone applications - a more technical category. While this bookstore is still only half loaded, it is clear that there are a lot of opportunities for being able to sell products to customers.

We have now loaded up approximately 1.6 million titles of which 1 million are now in stock. So for those of you with General bookstores (as opposed to the Christian Edition) you will find that the number of selections has increased dramatically over the last three months.

There will be quite a few changes and updates coming to the general bookstore. Some of those include music (yup, we will be adding music sometime over the next three months), and new content pages.

We also have a new general book distributor coming on board with four warehouses throughout the united states, bringing the number of fulfillment centers for secular/general books to 8 in the USA.

And whats selling on the secular bookstores?

Lots of things. We just sold "What to do with your Puppy when you first bring him home". And we've sold a lot of other products too. So think creatively when it comes to your marketing.
